MyLife Explorer (MLE) Groups

5 Peaks has effective and scalable solutions to meet the needs of Kindergarten-5th grade students.

Research is verifying what most educators have known for a long time. The social and emotional wellness of students bears a direct impact on their academic success or failure. As expectations rise on teaching staff to wear multiple hats beyond their core training and career objective as educators, we saw the need to provide skilled paraprofessionals on school campuses to aid and reinforce the work of increasing the social and emotional wellness of students.

To address these needs among younger adolescents, we developed the My-Life Explorer Groups. MLE is a weekly group of approximately 6 students and is led by 2 skilled, trauma-informed mentor-coaches who are YIPA certified Youth Work Specialists and certified in Social and Health Services Safety and Violence Prevention.

These groups meet on campuses during the regular school day.

The purpose of MLE is to help K-5th grade students understand and manage their feelings, gain social skills, and grow in executive functioning. Our model is based on interactive games, stories and activities that help students explore what they are experiencing inwardly in their emotions and outwardly in their social relationships with others.

Students receive MLE swag items and a participation reward at the end of the group process. An optional parent training night can be scheduled to help the parents of MLE students understand and support the process their child is going through and build the skills that will reinforce this exploration at home.

General and Focused Groups

Our general MLE group covers a broad range of social-emotional topics and effectively helps students with a variety of coping skills. Additionally, we offer groups that are focused on specific topics for a concentrated approach to help students facing particular difficulties. We currently offer focused groups including, Anxiety, Anger, Bullying and a group designed for academically challenged youth.

The program design is built on 12-14-week cycles but can easily be modified to shorter or longer timeframes. The groups can also be combined under the role of Resident Wellness Coaches. We use a self-reported Social-Emotional Wellness Survey at the beginning and again near the end of the group cycle. This allows our mentor-guides to focus attention on specific areas for individual student interventions or see where common areas of social-emotional difficulties are present in the whole group and design an emphasis on those areas.

Elevated Results

What our students learned most is how to cope with situations and we see them using the communication and coping skills outside of the groups.
